SAN ANTONIO – Speeding through school zones.

It’s a lingering concern for some North Side parents weeks into the new school year.

Fox San Antonio looked into the problem and what’s being done to slow drivers down.

Sidewalks create a safe path for students walking along Harry Wurzbach Parkway; but students in crosswalks are no match for speeding drivers.

“People tend to push the envelope and the limit is so much and you’re going to do a little bit more if nobody’s around,” Ezequiel Ramirez said.

That was the case for drivers we saw pulled over by Precinct 3 deputy constables.

The speed limit in school zones is prominently displayed, with flashing lights but drivers stopped were well over.

Reporter Darian Trotter asked, “How fast would you say they go? Definitely not the speed limit,” student Madalyn Walker replied.

Constables are stopping dozens of drivers a day during school hours.

One driver was texting and speeding.

“That is very dangerous habit to have,” Constable Mark Vojvodich said. “That’s likely to lead to an accident or hitting a pedestrian or somebody walking the streets one of these children.”

Speeding in a school zone could cost you more than $200 dollars using a cell phone is a separate $200 offense.

When the lights are flashing you’re expected to obey the law, even when students are not present.

Madalyn Walker goes to Garner Middle School, one of three schools in the area. She wants drivers to slow down.

“Because kids could get hurt especially over here if they’re crossing the street,” Walker said.

Her grandfather warns distracted students going to and from school are unpredictable.

He wants adults to expect the unexpected.

“Well you know the kids are young sometimes they’re not paying attention you see a group of them coming around horse playing somebody could get hurt,” Ramirez said.

Constables will continue traffic enforcement both before and after school.

If speeding is a problem where you live the constables office and police want to know.
