Former Bexar County jailer accused in drug ring conspiracy arrested again
A former Bexar County jailer who was accused of collecting drug debts for an inmate she allegedly fell in love with was arrested for a second time Tuesday in connection with the same incident, according to the sheriff’s office.
Rita Alvarez, 33, was arrested by the sheriff’s office’s fugitive apprehension unit Tuesday on suspicion of engaging in organized criminal activity.
Alvarez was first arrested on Aug. 2, 2017, after sheriff’s deputies became aware of her alleged behavior at the jail, but those charges were dismissed in November 2018.
Sheriff Javier Salazar said he and District Attorney Joe Gonzales are committed to holding public servants accountable if they’ve done something illegal.
“District Attorney Joe Gonzales and I are in constant contact regarding anticipated cases that pertain to public servants,” Salazar said. “Both he and I share the same stance of holding everyone accountable, especially public servants who have made the decision to break the law.”
Alvarez was given a dishonorable discharge and resigned from the sheriff’s office after her initial arrest.
She was taken into custody after a months-long investigation into a suspected drug dealing operation allegedly led by Cristobal “Buddha” Perez, who was arrested after authorities said they found more than 400 grams of block tar heroin and 200 grams of cocaine and hashish at a stash house in the 100 block of Monclova Alley.
